Authors reviewed the literatures concerning the evaluation of the patency and the function of the cerebrospinal fluid shunt. The methods about the evaluation of the function of the shunt in patients with hydrocephalus were divided into 4 categories ; radioisotope method, X-ray method, infusion method and others. Contemporary problems about the malfunction of shunt were discussed in this issue. The result indicated that multiple use among 4 categories is important for the evaluation of shunt function
