The study assessed how pastoralists in drought prone areas of Turkana Central district (Kenya) recover their livelihoods in the post drought period. According to pastoralist communities, external agents provide important services that influence recovery, such as provision of water, provision of relief food, and provision of employment and early warning services. Female dominated herds are an important post drought recovery strategy for breeding and replenishing stocks. It is important to recognize and maintain pastoral cultures, traditions and laws in mainstream policy making processes as these mechanisms are factors in successful implementation of government programmes.Master's degre
