Chapter 9Stone quarrying and crushing (SQC) is the second largest source of employment after agriculture in some regions. An ecosystem approach to health was used to design and implement participatory processes that would lead to action to improve the health and social conditions of communities dependent on SQC units. The project was successful in its ability to generate multi-stakeholder action. Limited scope for agriculture, coupled with stagnant industrial growth has led to temporary or long-term migration of family members (mostly male) in search of alternative sources of livelihood
