The project describes how newly displaced persons along the Thai-Burma border experienced difficulties while in hiding; their welfare and health situations; how religion plays a role in assisting them and how they developed strategies for survival in borderland communities on the Thai side. The research aims to demystify the identity of displaced people, and has implications for border policy and humanitarian assistance. Displaced people tend to be viewed as helpless, only waiting for humanitarian assistance. This often shapes the way in which humanitarian assistance is provided
