Policy brief : micro and small enterprises in Lebanon

The present policy brief is based on the country report prepared on the Micro and Small Enterprises of Lebanon within the framework of a larger study on the MSE sector in four MENA countries (Morocco, Egypt, Turkey and Lebanon). The main objective of the study was to improve the knowledge of the economic and social characteristics of the MSE sector in those countries with a view to tapping, its potential contribution to growth and employment generation, especially for the poor. In this context, the Lebanese study examines the sectors' current status, existing constraints and potential for growth. This enhanced understanding is expected to assist in the design of policies and programs that would allow this sector to fulfil its potential growth with expected spin-off effects for the national economy. Such a framework is crucial, especially given the substantial share of this sector in the Lebanese economy, and in light of the changing environment resulting from globalization and trade liberalization, and the possible threat to traditional incomes and livelihoods of a major disadvantaged segment of the society
