Surrogacy occurs within a legal vacuum in India. There is no Indian law governing it - just a set of ethical guidelines recommended by the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR). In the absence of legal control, and the unabated inflow of infertile couples both Indian and foreign, surrogacy has become a big business. The article describes procedures and contexts wherein couples make the decision and undergo the procedures for surrogacy, including medical tourism.
