Assessment of forest management options for preventing forest fire in Indonesia

This study finds there is weak enforcement of forest conservation rules and regulations in Indonesia, due to resource and institutional failures. Indonesia loses two million hectares of forest every year from forest fires. High priorities for improvements involve strengthening policy implementation in the field, putting in place an effective reward and punishment system, and the establishment of an institution that will monitor and record stakeholder compliance and violations. As well, it is important to ensure that parliament supports and finances the appropriate policies, and that local communities are empowered to weed out corruption and bribery
