The project worked to characterize backyard poultry rearing systems, the variations among them, their roles in rural livelihood systems, and to work with stakeholders in this sector to devise practical, equitable and sustainable options to reduce the likelihood of a human Avian Influenza (AI) pandemic. Joint research was carried out in five Asian Countries: Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, Viet Nam and China. A logit model estimation shows that better knowledge of AI’s zoonosis and AI policy, more trust in government policy, perception of AI threat and higher compensation for culled poultry will increase farmers’ willingness to report suspected AI cases
