During the Edo era trade between China and Japan, a large number of calligraphic materials such as rubbings were imported from Qing China. These rubbings were used among Japanese intellectuals as a guide for their own study of Chinese calligraphic style. In the late Edo period, Confucianism had become the main cultural influence among intellectuals, and as a result of this Chinese calligraphic culture also became highly regarded and was much imitated by Japanese calligraphers. Among the rubbings entering the ports at Nagasaki were those of the famous calligrapher Dong Qichang of the Ming Dynasty. Many Japanese calligraphers became highly influenced by Dong’s style.
