The development of university research in African contexts needs to be supported, with best practices shared across institutions and countries. A situational analysis of the governance of university research was undertaken in six universities in five countries in west and central Africa. The article reviews findings from the questionnaire and interviews with administrators, professors and students. Most universities have no mechanisms for setting research priorities
