26 participants from 24 community-based organizations developed strategies for sustainability. Participants represented five main groups: Kenya Marine Forum, Beach Management Units, mariculture and mangrove restoration, fisherfolk, community tourism and conservation. Often the beach buffer zone above the high water mark has either been illegally possessed or encroached on by private developers. The information from the workshop will be distilled into policy advisories. A legal review of current policies is required. Since Kenya’s coastal fisheries are highly diverse (reflecting diverse marine ecosystems) fisheries management should be specified according to the species and locations of the different fisheries
