The research examines the informal trading economy in the context of post-conflict Angola. Informal economic activities appear not to have declined, and the majority of activities continue to be trading rather than the service sector or manufacturing. New markets further from the centre of the city have taken on the function of wholesale markets for products coming from the rest of the country. There is a shortage of formal employment and this paper traces the contexts for small-scale retail trade, which makes up the bulk of the informal economy in Luanda
