In recent decades, the Chinese government has worked to fight rural poverty and improve the lives of rural people, especially in the underdeveloped regions of China. Analysis of how internal and external/contextual factors and their interfaces influence local institutions is important. China’s ecological crises are particularly severe in its western region where rural poverty, ecological fragility and economic underdevelopment are interwoven.
