O grau de concentração da produção de milho no Centro-Sul brasileiro

Environmental and socioeconomical factors influence the geographical localization of agricultural activities as well as its performance and development potential. This paper reports on the study to analyse the degree of maize production concentration in the South-Central region of Brazil. This study is based on the hypothesis that agricultural activity in an homogeneous environment should have a greater degree of dispersion. The analysis is based on the premise that in such environments it is likely to occur greater and more uniform development, within a set of social-economic factors. The macroagroecological region division of Brazil is used to estimate Gini indexes for the different environments of maize production. The results show a stronger concentration in the Central-Western region, considering either geopolitical boundaries or macroagroecological division. Greater dispersion was observed in the Southern region. The results support the hypothesis that maize production is more disperse in the macroagroecological zones where production is greater than in the state where the zone is inserted.Fatores ligados ao meio ambiente e sócio-econômicos, condicionam a localização geográfica de uma atividade agrícola, bem como seu desempenho e potencial de desenvolvimento. Na hípotese de que, em um ambiente mais homogêneo uma atividade agrícola deve apresentar maior grau de dispersão, este trabalho procura analisar o grau de concentração da produção de milho no Centro-Sul do Brasil. Acredita-se que em um ambiente assim, respeitados os fatores sócio-econômicos, se possa obter um desenvolvimento mais acentuado e uniforme. Usa-se como referência o delineamento macroagroecológico do Brasil e são estimados índices de Gini para os diferentes ambientes onde acontece a produção de milho. Os resultados revelam concentração mais forte na região Centro-Oeste, tanto considerando a divisão política quanto o zoneamento macroagroecológico. Por outro lado, maior dispersão é observada na Região Sul. Os resultados dão ainda suporte à hipótese formulada, de que a produção de milho é mais dispersa nas zonas macroagroecológicas onde essa produção é mais expressiva, do que no estado onde a zona está inserida
