The surfaces of a fine grained, high alumina ceramic substrate material were modified by various treatments in order to determine the effect of surface character on fracture strength. The resulting surfaces were characterized by profilometer measurements and electron microscopy. Fracture strengths were determined by transverse bend tests using four point loading
