Simplified hydroponics involves using light-weight growing media in place of soil, thus making gardening on rooftops feasible. By combining the results of three growing seasons, and collaborative investigations with other urban agriculture groups in Montreal, Action and Communication Network for International Development (Alternatives) has laid the groundwork to begin to apply rooftop simplified hydroponics on a larger scale in Canada. The primary researcher participated in a three-week training course with the Institute of Simplified Hydroponics where she was exposed to the results from research and applications in Mexico, Columbia, Senegal and Zimbabwe
