Policy recommendations regarding urban agriculture need to conceptualise gender as a social, political, economic and cultural issue, as well as a human right's issue, to which local governments, institutions and organisations have to respond. This paper provides a granular analysis of aspects of a variety of women’s roles in urban agriculture. These can be location-specific, and the paper provides illustrative cases
