This book investigates the role of entrepreneurial networks in creating opportunities and in building markets, focusing on Russia's first-generation entrepreneurs. The study examines their environment, challenges and strategies in order to succeed in an economy where uncertainty was the norm and where the institutional framework of a liberal economic system was part fact and part fiction. The empirical focus seeks to identify an institutional explanation why some graduates of the PMPT program (USSR President Yeltsin’s "President's Management Training Program") were more upwardly mobile than others and why some contributed more to business development and institutional development than others.Doctor of Philosoph
