Injuries, affecting mainly the male adolescent and adult population, have already become the third most frequent admission to the hospitals. It is estimated that there are approximately 2.5 million injury cases/year in the population, of which 133,000 cases were hospitalized. Forty percent of the injury cases admitted into hospitals were caused by motor vehicle crashes and 35% suffered head injuries. Of the 59.500 persons/year who died of injuries, 4.000 died in hospitals. A rising tendency was observed of the proportion of injury cases admitted to hospitals each year. The existing programs in Injury Prevention and Health Promotion for the injured need to be further stimulated, activated and strenghtened to meet an anticipated increasing number of cases in the near future
