The application of tissue culture techniques in woody plants offers a valuable alternative for the propagation of elite trees. With the objective of obtaining the in vitro establishment of mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla King), the starting material were young buds taken from plants in field conditions. For the disinfection of the vegetal material two concentrations of hypochlorite of sodium (NaClO) combined with three times of exposition were studied. The percentage of the variables contaminated explants, necrotic explants and survival, were evaluated. Later, the method of disinfection of the explants was determined.
