Annual report on Soybean Research and Development Project for 1988-1989

Pakistan is deficit in edible oil and to meet the consumption requirements it has to import a large quantity of edible oil for which higher amount of foreign exchange is being spent. For 1988-89, the total consumption was 1271 thousand tonnes while domestic production was 391 thousand tonnes. The local production of edible oil is from cottonseed, rapeseed, and mustard, groundnut and non-conventional oilseed crops in ratio of 70, 23, 6 and 1 percent respectively. Research under this project was conducted on the performance of soybean in different ecological zones in Punjab, Sind and NWFP. The results from this research shows the yield potential of difference leading varieties of soybean in the three provinces of the country under different cropping systems i.e. cotton fallow, rice fallow, rainfed fallow, autumn fallow and higher elevation
