The Narrative of Citizenship: A Plot for Imagining the Collective Identity of Europeans?

The presentation will address the question of whether the idea of citizenship is a feasible narrative for constructing a collective identity in Europe. Citizenship beyond the nation state is seen as an experiment which has a long history in Europe. This history of relating citizenship with a sense of being part of Europe is looked into more closely. It starts out with the recent debate of a «banal» Europeanism as the basis for elite-produced and elite-driven images of Europe. It then goes into the question of whether European integration fosters citizenship as a founding myth for a European collective identity. The final problem raised is the old problem of a democratic conception of a collective identity that has a particular importance in the European context.L’articolo affronta la questione se l’idea di cittadinanza possa costituire una narrazione capace di costruire un’identità collettiva europea. La cittadinanza, oltre lo Stato-nazione, rappresenta un esperimento che ha una lunga storia in Europa. È proprio questo tentativo di unire la cittadinanza con il senso di esser parte dell’Europa che viene preso in esame. Partendo dal recente dibattito sull’«Europeismo banale», considerato come fonte di diffusione delle immagini dell’Europa, prodotte e veicolate dalle élites, l’articolo affronta la questione se l’integrazione europea promuova la cittadinanza come mito fondativo per un’identità collettiva europea. Infine, viene sollevato l’antico problema di una concezione democratica dell’identità collettiva che riveste una particolare importanza nel contesto europeo
