The method of preparation of alumina sol by two different routes from simple precursor (hydrated aluminium nitrate and chloride) are described Viscosity, solid content, particle size distribution and morphology of particles are studied to characterize the sols. DTA and XRD techniques have been applied for phase identification and their changes during heating. The effect of these sols in high alumina refractory castables have also been studied and discussed in this paper
