The genus Astaragalus is represented by 445 species 224 of which are endemic in Turkish flora. Astragalus species have been used to obtain “gum tragacanth” for many years. Also, numerous Astragalus species have been used for their hepatoprotective, diuretic, cardioprotective, antidiyabetic, antiinflammatory antioxidant, immunstimulant and antiviral properties. Astragalus species contain triterpenoid saponins, polysaccharides, flavonoids, organic acids and alkaloids.
