Gruplar Arası Tehdit ve Empatinin Suriyeli Göçmenlere Yönelik Açık ve Örtük Tutumlar Üzerindeki Etkisi

Inflated numbers of Syrian refugees in Turkey leaded to a stableinteraction between Turkish citizens and Syrian refugees, therefore that attitudes towards Syrian refugees in Turkey has become more critical to study. Intergroup threat is experienced when members of one group perceive that another group is in a position to cause them harm.The concept of empathy, which plays a crucial role in the attitudes toward out group, is generally defined as the ability to recognize and share another person’s feelings and truly understand what the person has going through. Consistent with the literature, it was thought that intergroup threat and empathy affect both the explicit and implicit attitudes toward Syrian refugees. The effect of intergroup threat and empathy on explicit attitudes towards Syrian refugees was investigated in the first experiment carried out in the study. On the other hand, the second experiment was conducted to investigate implicit attitudes toward Syrian refugees in relation with the concepts stated below. In both experiments, empathy was manipulated by using the perspective taking method. Thus, participants were divided into two groups (high threat/low threat), then participants in high empathy condition were shown a video containing an interview with Syrian refugees while participants in the low empathy condition were shown a video related to “space-time”. The findings indicated that both explicit and implicit attitudes were more negative when participants are high in intergroup threat. Additionally, it has been observed that at both levels of intergroup threat, participants who put themselves in refugees’ shoes had more positive explicit and implicit attitudes.Türkiye’de artan mülteci sayısı Türk toplumu ile mültecilerin sürekli bir etkileşim içinde olmalarını gerektirmiş, böylece Türkiye’de Suriyeli mültecilere yönelik tutumların çalışılması daha kritik bir konu haline gelmiştir. Bireyin dış grubun varlığını kendisine veya iç grubuna yönelik bir tehdit olarak nitelendirmesi gruplar arası tehdit algısına yol açmaktadır. Dış gruba yönelik tutumlar üzerinde rol oynayan bir başka kavram olan empati ise en genel hatlarıyla bir kişinin kendisini karşıdaki kişinin yerine koyarak olaylara onun bakış açısıyla bakması, o kişinin duygularını ve düşüncelerini anlayıp, hissetmesi olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Bu bulgular doğrultusunda, gruplar arası tehdit algısı ve empati değişkenlerinin Türkiye’de mültecilere yönelik hem açık hem de örtük tutumlar üzerinde etkili olacağı düşünülmüştür. Araştırmada yürütülen birinci deneyde, gruplar arası tehdit algısı ve empatinin Suriyeli mültecilere yönelik açık tutumlar üzerindeki etkisini; ikinci deneyde ise aynı değişkenlerin Suriyeli mültecilere yönelik örtük tutumlar üzerindeki etkisini incelemek amaçlanmıştır. Her iki deneyde de empati düzeyini değişimlemek amacıyla perspektif alma yöntemi temel alınmıştır. Bu kapsamda, gruplar arası tehdit algısı düzeyine bağlı olarak iki gruba ayrılan (yüksek tehdit/düşük tehdit) katılımcılardan yüksek empati koşulundaki katılımcılara Suriyeli mülteciler ile yapılan röportajı içeren bir video izletilmiş, kontrol grubundaki katılımcılar ise uzayda zaman kavramı ile ilgili bir video izlemişlerdir. Her iki deneyde de elde edilen bulgular tutarlı olarak gruplar arası tehdit algısı yüksek olduğunda açık ve örtük tutumların daha olumsuz olduğunu göstermiştir. Ayrıca, gruplar arası tehdit algısının her iki düzeyinde de mülteciler ile empati kuran kişilerin mültecilere yönelik daha olumlu tutumlara sahip oldukları görülmüştür
