The pathophysiological role of fetal hemoglobin in thalassemia was described in the beginning of the 1960s, when various genetical and biochemical studies attributed the survival of patients suffering severe abnormalities in chain to the existence of HbF. Thus, it was made clear that abundant production of fetal hemoglobin can considerably improve the clinical picture of patients suffering from -thalassemia and sickle cell anemia. Hence various pharmaceutical substances were tested - first on animals and subsequently on patients - which led to the increase in fetal hemoglobin.
