During this short period, the two scholars discussed many issues concerning the state of art history and its relationship to semiotics and psychoanalysis. A recurring topic was Freud’s famous lapse of memory concerning the name of the Renaissance artist Luca Signorelli—what to make of the lapsus in art-historical terms and how to make use of it in analyzing Signorelli’s cycle of frescoes at the Cathedral of Orvieto in Italy. Damisch was then beginning to work on a book devoted to the subject while Schapiro was writing a small essay on the topic.Entre janvier 1972 et décembre 1973 l’historien de l’art et philosophe français Hubert Damisch et l’historien de l’art américain Meyer Schapiro échangèrent quarante-quatre lettres. Durant cette courte période, les deux chercheurs ont discuté de nombreux points concernant l’état de l’histoire de l’art et sa relation à la sémiotique et à l’analyse psychologique. Un sujet récurrent était le célèbre manque de mémoire de Freud concernant le nom de l’artiste de la Renaissance Luca Signorelli : que faire du lapsus en termes d’histoire de l’art et comment l’utiliser dans l’analyse du cycle de fresques peint par Signorelli dans la cathédrale d’Orvieto en Italie ?
