International audienceThe epidemiological approach helps to provide scientific evidence of cause-and-effect relations with respect to population health. Applied to productive activities, it has contributed to advances in the regulation of occupational risks, sometimes beyond the walls of the factory. However, it has been difficult in recent decades to produce new knowledge, not only on emerging risks but also on those that accumulate throughout working life and beyond. In this respect, work can be analysed as a particular sphere in which conflicts of standards in epidemiology complicate the emergence of a scientific discourse on responsibilities of/at work.
