This is a quality improvement project with an educational intervention to address childhood obesity in Newark, New Jersey. Childhood obesity is a major public health issue affecting approximately 12.7 million children in the United States. Recent statistics indicate that approximately one-third of children in the United States are overweight or obese. Parents and teachers play a significant role in the development of healthy eating and physical activity behaviors among children. However, there is limited evidence regarding the role of teachers and parents as role models for healthy living among children.
