Postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant mental health phenomenon occurring in 10-30% of women in the first year after childbirth. Its sequelae impacts the mother, her children, and family unit. Postpartum depression causes anhedonia, impairs the mothers ability to care for herself and her children, and can lead to impaired childhood developmental progression. Screening for PPD can identify its symptoms, allow for prompt referral to appropriate support and treatment resources, and minimize its associated negative outcomes.
