Th is paper discusses two Scandinavian crime novels, each of which contain characters who represent two diff erent perspectives on the phenomenon of being an outsider: one protagonist who comes from “the outside” is confronted by life in the North, while another group of protagonists, in the second novel, are members of a minority community, and hence also occupy a position as outsiders. Among the issues that these outsider-protagonists deal with is the forgetting or denial of their own roots.
