L'HOMME DANS LE MONDE SURNATUREL LADAKHI

International audienceThe traditional supernatural world of the Ladakhi people comprises three main groups of beings (lha, tsan, lhu) inhabiting three different levels. The gods (lha) live in the sky (stanlha); beneath the Buddhist pantheon are the minor deities considered here, comprising six groups each with its distinct social role, five of them being honoured by special altars (lhatho). The red demons, like many other ogres, fairies, etc., live in the human world, and are ceaselessly on the prowl. Seen from the front they are beautiful but it is terrible and often fatal to see them from behind as they have no backs and all their organs are exposed. The deities of water, earth and fertility (lhu) live in the waters and the underworld (yoklhu); in general they have the forms of fish or reptiles but may assume a human likeness. They can bring good or bad luck and to avoid the latter one must carefully avoid harming lhu or defiling the places where they live. Both lha and lhu are thought of as inhabitants of structurally and socially organized worlds, resembling and interwoven with the human world, while the solitary tsan are a kind of failed men or even "anti-men''Les habitants du monde surnaturel ladakhi se divisent en trois groupes principaux, les lha, les tsan et les lhu, occupant trois niveaux différents. Le monde du milieu est celui des humains, mais aussi des ogres des fées, etc. C'est surtout celui de démons rouges, les tsan. Les tsan n'ont pas de dos. Vus de face ils sont très beaux. Vus de dos ils sont horribles. On en voit les viscères, et cette vision peut rendre malade, voire être fatale. Restent les lhu, divinités de l'eau et de la fertilité qui habitent dans les eaux et dans le monde d'en-bas, le monde souterrain appelé yoklhu. Ils prennent la forme de poissons ou reptiles et peuvent aussi avoir une apparence humaine. Ils peuvent apporter richesse et prospérité, mais aussi maladie. Tout dépend du comportement que l'on a avec eux. Lha et lhu renvoient à deux aspects de la société humaine, tandis que les tsan constituent une sorte d'antihumanité
