Sainte-Croix d'Ałt'amar. Sens symbolique, architectural et iconographique de la dédicace

International audienceMajor monument of medieval art and outstanding phenomenon, the palatal church of Ałt'amar, built in the early 10th century by King Gagik, founder of the Kingdom of Vaspurakan in southern Armenia, is dedicated to the Holy Cross and housed a relic of the Holy Wood. The article explores the meaning of this dedication and of the reliquary function, and examines their possible impact on the architectural composition of the church and the carved decoration of its western façade. Some observations also concern the place of the cross in the medieval architecture and sculpted decoration of Armenia and Georgia.Monument majeur d'art médiéval et phénomène hors du commun, l'église palatine d'Ałt'amar, construite au début du Xe siècle par le roi Gagik, fondateur du royaume de Vaspurakan dans le sud de l'Arménie, est dédiée à la Sainte Croix et abrite une relique du Saint Bois. L'article explore le sens de cette dédicace et de la fonction de reliquaire, et examine leurs possibles incidences sur la composition architecturale de l'église et le décor sculpté de sa façade occidentale.
