The current assimilation of Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) in GEOS involves very careful cloud screening and homogenization of the observing system by means of a neural network that translates satellite reflectances from MODIS into AERONET calibrated AOD. In this talk we will present an update of the GEOS aerosol assimilation system, with emphasis on the improved treatment of MODIS observations. We will then proceed to assess the impact of geostationary aerosol observations from the ABI and AHI sensors on the GOES-16 and Himawari-8 satellites.
