This chapter provides a brief overview of some of the complexities of the urban environment that impact urban inhabitants, particularly those made vulnerable by economic, racial, and health disparities. Within in this context, the definition of environmental justice (EJ) is provided, examples of EJ issues affecting urban communities are provided, and the challenges for both communities and service-learning practitioners are described
