Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) is a fundamental problem in mobile robotics. In order for a mobile robot to construct a map of its surroundings, the robot needs to detect objects around it and fuse the detections into a map. Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensors have extensively been used for the mapping process. However, the detection range of LiDAR may not be enough in an environment such as an open field which contains only a few distinguishable features. In these featureless environments SLAM might underestimate the motion of the robot thus failing to produce a consistent map.
