The primary aim of this thesis is to explore women’s organizations in West Sumatra, with special emphasis on the New Order period. It seeks to analyze the cultural and historical background of women’s organizations in the region and the modes and characteristics of their movements.The main point of this thesis has been to reveal the significance of the cultural and historical background of Minangkabau women and the development of women’s organizations in West Sumatra during the New Order. It is not a custom nor a tradition of the Minangkabau people to exclude women from social and political life.
