This paper looks at different types of fortification used across north-west Europe between the twelfth and early seventeenth centuries. These incude castles, town walls, artillery fortifications, linear fortifications, territorial defences, fortified houses, crannogs and moated sites. One major theme in the paper is how the development of fortifications throughout this period reflect changes in society.Peer reviewe
