Profile of the oncological child and the performance of the nursing team in clinical evaluation and pain management

Background and Objectives: Pain is a prevalent symptom in the universe of the child who experiences childhood cancer, being responsible for a series of limitations and suffering in this population. The objective of the study was to know the profile of the oncological child and the performance of the nursing team in the clinical evaluation and pain management. Method: Descriptive exploratory study of a quantitative-qualitative approach carried out in a pediatric referral hospital in Florianópolis from April to November 2018. Quantitative data were collected from 375 medical records of hospitalized children between January 2012 and December 2016 and submitted the descriptive analysis. Also included in the study were 14 nursing professionals through semi-structured interviews and content analysis. Results: Pain was observed in 134 children, showing a majority of male children between the ages of 1 and 4 years. Pharmacological treatment was the main therapy. Communication with infants and young children and medical prescription were highlighted as major challenges for professionals. Conclusion: It is concluded that the identification of pain in the child needs to be more active, as well as its evaluation and management. Thus, it is recommended to develop activities of permanent education in health, with emphasis on evaluation, management and recording of pain, as well as the availability of protocols for approaching pain.Justificativa e Objetivos: A dor é um sintoma prevalente no universo da criança que vivencia o câncer infantil, sendo responsável por uma série de limitações e sofrimento nessa população. O estudo objetivou conhecer o perfil da criança oncológica e a atuação da equipe de enfermagem na avaliação clínica e manejo da dor. Método: Estudo exploratório descritivo de abordagem quanti-qualitativo realizado em um hospital pediátrico de referência em Florianópolis, no período de abril à novembro de 2018. Os dados quantitativos foram coletados de 375 prontuários de crianças internadas entre janeiro de 2012 a dezembro de 2016 e submetidos a analise descritiva. Também fizeram parte do estudo 14 profissionais de enfermagem através de entrevistas semiestruturada e analise de conteúdo. Resultados: A dor foi observada em 134 crianças, evidenciando uma maioria de crianças do sexo masculino entre a idade de 1 a 4 anos. O tratamento farmacológico foi a principal terapêutica. A comunicação com as lactentes e crianças menores e a prescrição médica foram evidenciados como maiores desafios para os profissionais. Conclusão: Conclui-se que a identificação da dor na criança necessita ser mais ativa, bem como sua avaliação e manejo. Assim, recomenda-se desenvolver atividades de educação permanente em saúde, com destaque para avaliação, ao manejo e ao registro da dor, além de disponibilidade de protocolos para abordagem da dor
