The antioxidant effect of the damascena rose essential oil: a literature review

Abstract: The essential oil of Rosa damascena has been focus of studies due to its ability to neutralize the free radicals produced in the body. The presence of phenolic compounds in the essential oil of Rosa damascena was shown by some authors as having antioxidant activity. This study is being shown as a narrative literature review. The searches were made having the basis bibliographic data as Pubmed, Scielo, Periódicos Capes and the Google Acadêmico. The search in the basis of the data was done using the descriptors “antioxidant” and “essential oil of Damascena Rose”, in which, after reading all the titles, 5 articles were selected for this review work. The essential oil of Rosa Damascena can be used safely in the aesthetic área, being itself a natural antioxidant that neutralizes the free radicals formed in the body, being able to delay the process of ageing. The major constituents of the essential oils of the rose were pointed out as citronellol, geraniol, nerol, phenyl ethyl alcohol and nonadecane. However, it is suggested the realization of new clinical studies that evaluate the antioxidant activity of the essential oil of Damascena Rose in order to substantiatea more precise antioxidant effect to the aesthetic use.O OE de Rosa damascena tem sido foco de estudos, devido à sua capacidade de neutralizar os radicais livres produzidos no organismo. A presença de compostos fenólicos no OE de Rosa damascena foi mostrada por alguns autores como possuindo atividade antioxidante. Este estudo caracteriza-se como uma revisão narrativa de literatura. As buscas foram realizadas em bases de dados bibliográficas como Pubmed, Scielo, Periódicos Capes e Google Acadêmico. A busca nas bases de dados foi realizada utilizando os descritores “antioxidante” e “óleo essencial de Rosa damascena”, onde após a leitura de todos os títulos, foram selecionados 5 artigos para este trabalho de revisão. Os constituintes majoritários do OE de rosa foram apontados como citronelol, geraniol, nerol, álcool fenil etílico e nonadecano. O OE de Rosa damascena pode ser utilizado com segurança na área estética, sendo um antioxidante natural que neutraliza os radicais livres formados no organismo, podendo retardar o processo de envelhecimento. No entanto, sugere-se a realização de novos estudos clínicos que avaliem a atividade antioxidante do OE de Rosa damascena, com o fim de evidenciar um efeito antioxidante mais preciso para o uso na estética
