Evaluation the quotient of empathy in medical students in a University in Southern of Santa Catarina

This article aims to evaluate the levels of empathy in medical students at a University in in Southern of Santa Catarina. This is a cross-sectional observational study, where questionnaires were applied, one with sociodemographic information and the other that evaluated empathy, composed of 15 questions. Three hundred and sixty five students from the 1st to the 10th phase participated in this study. The majority of the students who answered the questionnaires were female (59.73%) and single (95.90%), with a mean age of 22.44 years (sd ±3.01). The mean score for global empathy resulted in 42.09 (sd ±4.91) points; for cognitive empathy 14.25 (sd ±2.77) points, for emotional reactivity 16.09 (sd ±2.31) points and for social skills 14.75 (sd ±2.50) points. It was verified through statistical tests that there was no difference in the mean of the global empathy quotient (p-value> 0.05) when related to the sex of the participants. For the dimensions of empathy, emotional reactivity (p-value 0.05). Global empathy was also related to the stage of the student was in through a linear regression model. Although there was no significant difference between the means of the students per phase, the data indicated a tendency to decrease empathy over the stage. Therefore, further studies are needed to corroborate the results in view of the importance of empathy in medical training.Este artigo visou avaliar os níveis de empatia em estudantes de Medicina de uma Universidade do Sul de Santa Catarina. Trata-se de um estudo observacional transversal, onde foram aplicados questionários, um com informações sociodemográficas e outro que avaliou a empatia, composto por 15 questões. Participaram desta pesquisa 365 alunos, da 1ª a 10ª fase. A maioria dos estudantes que responderam os questionários eram do sexo feminino (59,73%) e solteiros (95,90%), com média de idade de 22,44 anos (dp ±3,01). O escore médio para a empatia global resultou em 42,09 (dp ±4,91) pontos; para empatia cognitiva 14,25 (dp ±2,77) pontos, para a reatividade emocional 16,09 (dp ±2,31) pontos e para as habilidades sociais 14,75 (dp ±2,50) pontos. Verificou-se por meio de testes estatísticos que não houve diferença na média do quociente de empatia global (p-valor >0,05) quando relacionada com o sexo dos participantes. Para as dimensões da empatia, reatividade emocional (p-valor 0,05). A empatia global também foi relacionada com a fase que o estudante se encontrava por meio de um modelo de regressão linear. Apesar de não haver diferença significativa entre as médias dos alunos por fase, os dados indicaram uma tendência a diminuição da empatia com os passar das fases. Portanto, novos estudos são necessários para corroborar os resultados tendo em vista a importância da empatia na formação médica
