Gluten-free diet, health conditions and quality of life of individuals with celiac disease

The aim of the study was to analyze the adherence to the gluten-free diet among patients with celiac disease, to know health conditions and to identify variables that affect a quality of life. To do so, perform a quantitative cross-sectional and descriptive study with celiac adults and elders of both sexes, aged ≥ 20 years, using a questionnaire as instrument. Descriptive analysis of the data expressed in frequency (relative and absolute), chi-square test and Multinominal Logistic Regression, with significance of (p <0.05) were performed. A total of 374 celiac patients participated in the study, the majority being female (93.8%). Before the diagnosis, 87.4% were symptomatic and after diagnosis 20.6% had gas daily, 27.8% nervousness and irritability some cases in the week, 12.3% constipation once a week, 25.1% pain Abdominals three times a month. In comparison to the following, in the gluten-free diet, 37.7% presented little difficulty. The main concerns were eating in restaurants (73.3%), reading labels (76.2%) and preparing gluten-free meals (63.1%). The results indicated that adherence to the diet interferes with health and quality of life, where celiac sufferers face obstacles to adhere correctly to treatment.O estudo teve como objetivo analisar a adesão à dieta sem glúten entre indivíduos com Doença Celíaca, conhecer as condições de saúde e identificar variáveis que afetam a qualidade de vida. Para tanto, realizou-se uma pesquisa quantitativa, transversal e descritiva, com adultos e idosos celíacos, de ambos os sexos, com idade ≥ 20 anos, tendo como instrumento um questionário. Realizou-se análise descritiva dos dados expressas em frequência (relativa e absoluta), teste de qui-quadrado e Regressão Logística Multinominal, com significância de (p < 0,05). Participaram da pesquisa 374 celíacos, sendo a maioria do sexo feminino (93,8 %). Antes da realização do diagnóstico 87,4 % eram sintomáticos e após o diagnóstico 20,6 % apresentavam gases diariamente, 27,8 % nervosismo e irritabilidade algumas vezes na semana, 12,3 % constipação uma vez por semana, 25,1 % dores abdominais três vezes por mês. Em relação à dificuldade de seguir a dieta sem glúten 37,7 % apresentaram pouca dificuldade. As principais preocupações apontadas foram comer em restaurantes (73,3 %), leitura dos rótulos (76,2 %) e preparar as refeições sem glúten (63,1 %). Os resultados apontaram que a adesão à dieta interfere na saúde e na qualidade de vida, onde os celíacos passam por obstáculos para aderirem corretamente ao tratamento
