Influence of chemotherapy treatment on nutritional status of cancer patients attended at a hospital in the South of Santa Catarina

Introduction: Cancer encompasses more than 100 diseases that have in common the disordered growth of cells. The tumor presence as well as antineoplastic therapies directly affect the nutritional status of cancer patients. In this context, the nutritional evaluation in the cancer patient needs to be performed at the time of the first consultation and performed periodically during the treatment. Objective: To evaluate the influence of chemotherapy treatment on the nutritional status of cancer patients treated at a hospital in the south of Santa Catarina. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive, observational study was performed. Patients attended by the Department of Oncology of a hospital in the south of Santa Catarina from October 2016 to April 2017 participated in the study. They were submitted to anthropometric nutritional assessment in two moments: T0 - before and T1 - after chemotherapy treatment. The Wilcoxon test was used to compare the data. Results: In the evaluated population, 57.9% of the individuals belonged to the female sex and the average age was 63.7 years. The most frequent malignant neoplasm was breast cancer (31.5%). According to the Body Mass Index (BMI). The majority of the patients were overweight in both T0 and T1, 63.2% and 57.9%, respectively. Regarding the weight change in the last months was obtained 36.8% of severe weight loss. The comparison of the variables between the two moments showed significant differences for the BMI and TSF variables. Conclusion: Although the majority of the patients were overweight, according to BMI, a high percentage of nutritional depletion was observed, which highlights the importance of nutritional monitoring during the chemotherapy treatment in this population.Introdução: O câncer engloba mais de 100 doenças que têm em comum o crescimento desordenado de células. A presença do tumor bem como as terapias antineoplásicas afetam diretamente o estado nutricional do paciente oncológico. Nesse contexto a avaliação nutricional no paciente oncológico necessita ser realizada já no momento da primeira consulta e efetuada periodicamente no decorrer do tratamento. Objetivo: Avaliar a influência do tratamento quimioterápico sobre o estado nutricional de pacientes oncológicos atendidos em um hospital do sul de Santa Catarina. Métodos: Realizou-se estudo transversal, descritivo, observacional. Participaram do estudo pacientes atendidos pelo Departamento de Oncologia de um hospital do Sul de Santa Catarina no período de outubro de 2016 a abril de 2017. Estes foram submetidos à avaliação nutricional antropométrica em dois momentos: T0 – antes e T1 – após o tratamento quimioterápico. Foi utilizado o teste de Wilcoxon para a comparação dos dados. Resultados: Na população avaliada, 57,9% dos indivíduos pertencia ao sexo feminino e a idade média foi de 63,7 anos. A neoplasia maligna mais frequente foi a de mama (31,5%). De acordo com o Índice de Massa Corporal (IMC) a maior parte dos pacientes encontravam-se em sobrepeso, tanto no T0 quanto no T1, 63,2% e 57,9% respectivamente. Em relação à alteração ponderal nos últimos meses obteve-se 36,8% de perda de peso grave. A comparação das variáveis entre os dois momentos mostrou diferenças significativas para as variáveis IMC e DCT. Conclusão: Apesar de a maioria dos pacientes apresentarem sobrepeso, segundo o IMC, verificou-se elevado percentual de depleção nutricional, o que ressalta a importância do acompanhamento nutricional no decorrer do tratamento quimioterápico nessa população
