The article seeks to establish which are the most general characters in the «modem» (meaning post-ancient) world in Hegel’s view, and through which stages they are effectively realised. In regard to the first point it shows that these characteristics are notably moral freedom in the sense in which the individual acts on the basis of his convictions, an expressive State of the universalised will of the people and of popular assemblies or of Parliaments in which individual interests can be promoted. As to the second point it shows in what sense for Hegel the (immediate) high Middle Ages and the (divided) Middle Ages present only unsatisfactory versions of political modernity.
