Nowadays the influence of the philosophy of Herder on German idealism does not receive sufficient attention. Hegel’s philosophy of history, for example, undeniably derives from Herder’s historicism, although Hegel refers very rarely to Herder and does so almost exclusively to criticise him. To be sure, we cannot neglect the gap that separates Herder’s and Hegel’s conceptions of history. Nonetheless, Herder was the first to posit the premises of historicity in order to interrogate the meaning and the limits of the rationality of history, and Hegel to a large extent drew his inspiration from him in conceiving the relationship between spirit and history and in forging his conception of historicity.
