While there has been a rise in the demand of learning Mandarin in the United Kingdom in the last decade, the development of teaching Mandarin as a foreign language is still at its initial stage. In particular, research shows that there is inadequate continuous professional learning opportunities for in-service Mandarin teachers. Furthermore, as many of the Mandarin teachers are native-speakers without formal training prior to taking up their posts, they might not have the relevant Mandarin-specific pedagogical knowledge.
