This chapter characterizes the media system and summarizes it in terms of its history and cultural context. It describes advantages and disadvantages, when compared to the Anglophone paradigm, and also lays out the criticisms made of the Anglophone media in China. The chapter assesses whether the Chinese media will be able to earn the loyalty and respect that are attributed to the Anglophone media and reviews the parts played in determining this by the specific characteristics of the domestic media. Nevertheless, some useful things can be said as to how China's media differ from those of the Anglosphere and why, no matter whether the authors are looking at national policy or personal use.
