End milling of composite of banana stem fiber and polyurethane derived from castor oil

The production of goods that use inputs from planted forests, such as reconstituted wood panels used by the furniture industry, has been questioned by consumers and researchers due to environmental issues involved in the manufacturing process, such as the use of polymers of petroleum origin and the use of formaldehyde in the binder. In this scenario, materials are being developed that use raw materials from renewable sources and from waste discarded by agricultural and industrial processes. A proposed solution is the composite with natural fibers, using polyurethane derived from castor oil as a binder. For commercial use it is necessary to know the possibilities of machining through existing systems. The objective of this work is to analyze the process of end milling in a fiber composite of banana stem agglutinated with polyurethane derived from castor oil, evaluating surface roughness, surface defects and machining forces. The study was performed by milling slots in composite slabs using a carbide end mill. Higher cutting speeds proved to be better for surface roughness and generate less machining forces. The defects were concentrated in the upper edge of the channel and were influenced by the axial force of the cutter, where higher cutting speeds increased their quantity. The present work will contribute to the adequacy of the milling process in composite materials with natural fibers, stimulating the commercial use of the same.A produção de bens que utilizam insumos provenientes de florestas plantadas, como painéis de madeira reconstituída utilizados pela indústria moveleira, vem sendo questionada por consumidores e pesquisadores devido a questões ambientais envolvidas no processo de fabricação, como o uso de polímeros deorigem petrolífera e a utilização de formaldeído no aglutinante. Nesse cenário, estão sendo desenvolvidos materiais que utilizam matérias-primas de fontes renováveis e provenientes de resíduos descartados por processos agrícolas e industriais. Uma solução proposta é o compósito com fibras naturais, utilizando poliuretano derivado do óleo de mamona como aglutinante. Para seu uso comercial são necessários conhecimentos sobre as possibilidades de usinagem através de sistemas existentes. O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar o processo de fresamento de topo em um compósito de fibra do caule da bananeira aglutinada com poliuretano derivado de óleo de mamona, avaliando rugosidade de superfície, defeitos e forças de usinagem. O estudo foi realizado através do fresamento de canais em placas do compósito, utilizando uma fresa de topo de metal duro. Velocidades de corte maiores se mostraram melhores para a rugosidade de superfície e geraram menores forças de usinagem. Os defeitos se concentraram na aresta superior do canal e foram influenciados pela força axial da fresa, onde maiores velocidades de corte aumentaram a quantidade dos mesmos. O presente trabalho contribuirá para a adequação do processo de fresamento em materiais compósitos com fibras naturais, estimulando a utilização comercial do mesmo
