THESIS 6786Strong coupling between an atom and a cavity field is a well established phenomenon in the field of cavity quantum electrodynamics. However it was not until 1992 that improvements in growth technology resulted in the advent of strong coupling in semiconductor microcavities. The strong coupling in these novel systems is between a quantum well exciton and the confined photon field. Due to the similarities with three dimensional polaritons these states were called cavity polaritons. Due to their fast recombination rates cavity polaritons were anticipated in the early 1990s as a solution to the challenge of ultra-fast switching, which is needed in modern telecommunications.
