Cerium and lutétium sulphide Ce₄Lu₁₁S₂₂ crystallizes in the monoclinic system with parameters : a = 38.60 ± 0.04 Å ; b = 11. 21 ± 0.01 Å ; c = 3.910 ± 0.004 Å and γ = 91.3 ± 0.1°. The space group is B2/m and there are two formula units per unit cell. The atomic positions have been determined from a single crystal. The final R value for 1,520 observed structure factors is 0.032. Each of the two sites occupied by cerium have eight non-metal neighbours. A lutetium atom presents seven fold coordination. This kind of coordination was not yet known in the sulphides of this element. Five other lutetium atoms are in octahedral surrounding.
